Oxon Hill, MD, April 2007 – “I don’t know how I can ever thank you enough.” That was the heartfelt response from one Prince George’s County homeowner as she looked around at the repairs and maintenance performed on her home by members of the Timberlake Homes team on Saturday, April 28th. It was all part of Christmas In April – a national non-profit program that provides home repair for homeowners who lack the money and resources to do it themselves. Most of the program recipients are low-income elderly or disabled residents.
April 28th was a “blitz day” for Christmas In April as there were many projects happening throughout Maryland for the organization that day.
Timberlake Homes has participated in Christmas In April since 2006. “This year, we decided to take on two homes,” said Paula Morgan who serves as CFO for Timberlake Homes and also coordinates the Christmas In April projects for the company each year.
“Because our organization has grown tremendously over the past year, we anticipated having more volunteers than ever before, and the homes were just a few houses apart from each other. That made it very convenient for us to take on two homes.”
Work performed by the Timberlake volunteers included yard clean-up, appliance and toilet replacement, bathroom tile replacement, interior and exterior painting, house cleaning, railing and ceiling repairs and more. “Participating in these two projects was totally voluntary for our team members, and over half of our employees committed to helping. Some even had spouses and children who wanted to be involved and showed up that day too,” said Timberlake Homes President John Minzer. “It is rewarding to work with such caring individuals. And because we are a homebuilding and renovations company with so many construction-savvy people, this was the perfect fit for us.”
Timberlake also received support from some of its trade partners on these projects. Some donated labor and materials; others offered a discounted rate for the materials or work performed. Contributing companies including Power Source Electric, Banner Glass, Creative Touch Interiors and 84 Lumber. Breakfast and lunch was provided for all of the volunteers by Atlanta Bread Company in Waugh Chapel.
Each year, Timberlake Homes supports a variety of non-profit organizations including the Boys and Girls Club, Make-A-Wish, Happy Helpers for the Homeless, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Special Olympics, Center for Family Development and more. “We are fortunate to have experienced business success for over 40 years here in Maryland, so it is our pleasure to give back to the community in this way,” said Frank Lucente, Timberlake Homes Vice President. “For us, it isn’t a question of whether or not we should do projects like this. We will always support those in need – whether monetarily or through volunteering. It’s something we feel compelled to do, and it is extremely gratifying to see the results of our support.”
